Dog bites: hidden danger of fulminant sepsis.

چکیده
Dog bites are a common problem in family practice. Although the summer months often show a seasonal increase in the number of bites seen, they can and do occur at any time during the year. Often the family pet, not a stray animal, inflicts the bite. Because many dog owners have their pets vaccinated and know whether their pet has been exposed to rabies, victims bitten by the family dog are likely to assume that they cannot be infected. This assumption, however, is not valid. The danger of not seeking medical attention for animal bites is that infection can occur even when caused by the most well-eared-for pet. The following is a case report of a patient who did not report a dog bite to his family physician, even at the initial signs and symptoms of systemic illness, because he thought the bite was unimportant and not related to his illness.

Renal failure due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus generalized Shwartzman reaction from a dog bite (DF-2 nephropathy).
We report a case of a 54-year-old man who developed gram-negative sepsis with multiorgan failure and generalized Shwartzman reaction after sustaining a dog bite. The causative organism was the fastidious gram-negative rod Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which is a commensal organism found in the oral flora of dogs and cats. More than 30 years after it was first described and despite technological ad...
متن کاملCapnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis in a methotrexate-treated patient with rheumatoid arthritis
Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative rod that can be transmitted primarily by dog bites. This life-threatening organism commonly causes sepsis in patients with splenectomy or alcoholism. A 53-year-old rheumatoid arthritis male treated with methotrexate (MTX) for 5 years was admitted for a 4-day history of fever and dyspnea. He had been bitten on a finger by the family dog 4 days before ...
متن کاملSusceptibility of dysgonic fermenter 2 to antimicrobial agents in vitro.
Dysgonic fermenter 2 (DF-2) is a fastidious, gram-negative organism well recognized as a cause of fulminant septicemia in patients without spleens or patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. In vitro antibiotic susceptibility testing of eight strains with a Schaedler broth dilution technique revealed DF-2 to be susceptible to all of the antibiotics tested except aztreonam. Previous reports that DF-2 ...
متن کاملEndocarditis due to Staphylococcus aureus after minor dog bite.
Living in a society of animal lovers, the dangers are often not always apparent. Injury from bites and scratches is an occupational hazard for those people who work with animals. Despite the high risk of secondary wound infection as a result of an animal bite, many patients do not receive treatment with an antimicrobial medication. This report describes a case of a previously fit and well 66-ye...
متن کاملSepticemia caused by DF-2.
Fatal septicemia due to an unidentified gram-negative rod developed in a 60-year-old alcoholic. Infection due to this organism has been reported only rarely in the medical literature. Like Pasturella multocida, this organism is related to dog bites, is gram negative, and is sensitive to penicillin.
